What is Erectile Dysfunction (Klaibya)?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the ongoing difficulty in getting or keeping an erection firm enough for satisfying intimacy. One bad night is common and usually passes. When it keeps returning over weeks or months, it deserves attention.
In Ayurveda the condition is called Klaibya (also described as Napumsakata), and failure of erection is known as Dhwajabhanga. The classics link it to disturbed Vata dosha, especially Apana and Vyana Vata in the pelvic region, together with weakened Shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue), reduced Ojas (vital essence) and a strained mind (Manovaha Srotas).
At Maha Ayurved, we look at the whole person, not one symptom. A careful assessment comes first, so that treatable medical causes are never missed and any Ayurvedic plan is genuinely personal.

Types of Erectile Dysfunction We Assess
Right care starts with knowing what is driving the difficulty. Classical texts describe several kinds of Klaibya, such as Manasika, Shukrakshayaja, Jaraja and Dhwajabhanga. In everyday practice we group them into three.
ðĐš Organic ED
Linked to physical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and vessel disease, obesity, nerve problems or pelvic injury.
Ayurvedic view
Vitiated Vata, often with Pitta, disturbing circulation and nerve function. A medical check runs alongside Ayurvedic care.
ð§ Psychogenic ED
Rooted in stress, anxiety, low mood, relationship strain or fear of underperforming, even when the body is healthy.
Ayurvedic view
Chinta, Shoka and Bhaya aggravate Vata and unsettle the mind. Calming care such as Shirodhara and Pranayama takes priority.
âïļ Mixed ED
Physical and emotional factors feeding each other. This is a very common presentation, especially after the age of forty.
Ayurvedic view
Body and mind are treated together, so that relief in one does not leave the other unaddressed.
What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?
ED rarely has a single cause. We review each of the following before suggesting any plan.
Medical Conditions
Diabetes, hypertension, raised cholesterol, heart disease and nerve disorders can reduce blood flow and nerve signalling.
Hormonal Changes
Low testosterone and thyroid or other endocrine imbalance can dampen desire and erectile response.
Medicines
Some antidepressants, blood pressure tablets and sedatives list erectile difficulty as a side effect.
Stress and Mental Strain
Anxiety, depression, work pressure and relationship tension are leading causes in younger men.
Lifestyle Habits
Smoking, heavy alcohol, a sedentary routine, weight gain and poor sleep raise the risk over time.
Pelvic Injury or Surgery
Procedures or trauma involving the prostate, bladder or pelvis can affect the nerves and vessels involved.
ðŋ Causes described in Ayurveda (Klaibya Nidana)
Classical texts name worry, grief, fear and anger, excess sexual activity, irregular or unsuitable food, prolonged fasting, night waking and overexertion. Each is said to deplete Shukra and Ojas over time.
Common Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction
If any of these continue beyond a few weeks, an early consultation makes the condition easier to manage.
Trouble Getting an Erection
Erections that are slow to start or not firm enough for intimacy.
Trouble Keeping an Erection
Firmness that fades before or during intercourse.
Reduced Desire
Lower sexual interest, often with tiredness or low mood.
Performance Anxiety
Worry before intimacy that makes the difficulty worse.
Fewer Morning Erections
A change that may point to a physical contributing factor.
Strain Between Partners
Distance, embarrassment or avoidance in the relationship.
â ïļ When should you see a doctor?
Seek medical care promptly if ED begins suddenly, follows an injury or surgery, or comes with chest pain, breathlessness or numbness. ED can be an early signal of hypertension, diabetes or heart disease, so a basic physical check is a sensible first step.
Vajikarana and Panchakarma for ED at Maha Ayurved
Vajikarana is one of the eight branches of Ashtanga Ayurveda, devoted to sexual health, vitality and rejuvenation.
How Vajikarana Works
Herbal Rasayana, medicated oils and Vrishya foods are chosen to nourish Shukra dhatu, steady the doshas and support Ojas. Your physician selects them after assessing your Prakriti, current health and the type of ED.
Where Panchakarma Fits
Classical texts advise preparing the body before Vajikarana. Where suitable, Panchakarma clears Ama and balances the doshas: Basti for Vata-led patterns and Virechana when Pitta is prominent.
Vajikarana Rasayana
Classical herbal formulations that support stamina, vitality and reproductive health.
Basti
Medicated enema therapy, the principal treatment for Vata imbalance in the pelvic region.
Abhyanga and Swedana
Medicated oil massage and herbal steam to ease tension and support circulation.
Shirodhara
A steady stream of warm oil over the forehead to calm a restless, anxious mind.
Yoga and Pranayama
Guided posture and breathwork for stress, pelvic strength and sleep.
Pathya Diet
Warm, nourishing meals and Vrishya foods matched to your constitution.
Please note: Vajikarana and Panchakarma are specialised protocols and should only be taken under a qualified physician after proper diagnosis. Suitability and duration are decided individually.

Frequently Asked Questions About ED Treatment
What is erectile dysfunction (Klaibya) in Ayurveda?
Ayurveda describes ED as Klaibya or Napumsakata, and failure of erection as Dhwajabhanga. It is linked to disturbed Vata, weakened Shukra dhatu, reduced Ojas and a strained mind, and is addressed through Vajikarana.
What are the types of erectile dysfunction?
In practice we assess three types: organic ED from physical conditions, psychogenic ED from stress and emotional strain, and mixed ED, a combination of both. Classical texts also describe types such as Manasika, Shukrakshayaja, Jaraja and Dhwajabhanga.
Can Ayurveda treat erectile dysfunction?
Ayurveda offers individualised, supportive care through herbal formulations, Panchakarma, diet and stress management. Research is still developing and results vary with the cause, so it works best as part of a complete plan that includes a medical check where needed.
Is Ayurvedic treatment for ED safe?
Care under a qualified physician, using properly prepared medicines, is generally well tolerated. Some herbs can interact with other medicines, particularly for diabetes, blood pressure or heart conditions, so please share everything you take.
Can I combine Ayurvedic treatment with my current medicines?
Often yes, with coordination. Continue prescribed medicines, inform both doctors and never stop or change a prescription on your own.
Should I see a physician before starting Ayurvedic treatment?
If ED is sudden, follows injury or surgery, or comes with chest pain, breathlessness or numbness, seek medical care first. A check of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol is also worthwhile, as ED can signal an underlying condition.
How long does Ayurvedic ED treatment take?
It depends on the type and severity of ED, your general health and how consistently the plan is followed. Your physician will explain a review schedule after the first consultation.
Which lifestyle changes support ED treatment?
Regular warm meals, enough sleep, regular exercise, yoga and Pranayama, a healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco and excess alcohol. Vrishya foods such as almonds, dates and milk are advised as suited to you.
Where can I get confidential ED treatment in Pune?
