Understanding Panchakarma

What Is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma (also written Panchkarma) means “five actions”. In Ayurveda it is the classical system of Shodhana, or purification therapies, intended to clear accumulated Ama (metabolic waste), settle the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) and restore Agni, the digestive and metabolic fire.

It is a structured programme, not a spa package. The body is prepared, the main procedure is carried out under supervision, and recovery is guided with diet and lifestyle care. The method is described in the Charaka Samhita and other classical texts.

At Maha Ayurved, a Panchakarma clinic in Pune with centres in Wakad and Kasarwadi, every programme begins with a consultation. Whether Panchakarma suits you, and which therapy is chosen, depends on your constitution (Prakriti), your present imbalance (Vikriti), your strength (Bala) and the season (Ritu).

The Five Procedures

Panchakarma Therapies at Maha Ayurved

Each therapy has a specific purpose. Your physician may advise one, several in sequence, or none.

Vamana

वमन · Therapeutic emesis

A controlled, supervised procedure classically associated with Kapha, chosen after a full preparation phase and only after assessment.

KaphaVasanta (spring)

Virechana

विरेचन · Therapeutic purgation

Medicated purgation classically associated with Pitta. Your physician selects the preparation and plans your diet around it.

PittaSharad (autumn)

Basti

बस्ति · Medicated enema

Two forms are described: Niruha (decoction-based) and Anuvasana (oil-based). Classical texts link Basti closely with Vata and regard it as half of all treatment (Ardha Chikitsa).

VataVarsha (rains)

Nasya

नस्य · Nasal administration

Medicated oils or preparations given through the nose. The classics call the nose the doorway to the head, so Nasya is used for the head and neck region.

Head and neckTiming per type

Raktamokshana

रक्तमोक्षण · Bloodletting, where practised

Counted as the fifth karma in the Sushruta tradition. Used only where clinically appropriate and only by a trained physician.

Rakta / PittaSharad (autumn)

Two classical counts. The Charaka tradition lists Vamana, Virechana, Niruha Basti, Anuvasana Basti and Nasya. The Sushruta tradition lists Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana. Both are recognised, which is why you may see a different “five” on different websites.

Step by Step

How Does Panchakarma Work?

Panchakarma at Maha Ayurved follows the three traditional stages, preceded by a physician’s assessment.

  1. 01

    Assessment

    Rogi Pariksha

Your physician reviews your history, reports and medicines, and assesses Prakriti, Vikriti, Agni, Bala and the season. This decides whether Panchakarma is advised at all.

  2. 02

    Preparation

    पूर्वकर्म · Purvakarma

Deepana-Pachana (to kindle digestion), Snehana (oleation with medicated oil or ghee, inside and outside the body) and Swedana (herbal sudation) prepare the body. Abhyanga massage is often part of this stage.

  3. 03

    Main Procedure

    प्रधानकर्म · Pradhanakarma

The therapy chosen by your physician, such as Vamana, Virechana, Basti or Nasya, is carried out under supervision.

  4. 04

    Recovery

    पश्चात्कर्म · Paschatkarma

A graded, easy-to-digest diet (Samsarjana Krama) and lifestyle advice rebuild Agni. Dhumapana or Rasayana herbs are given only if prescribed.

  5. 05

    Follow-up

    Anuvartana

Your physician reviews how you have responded and advises daily routine (Dinacharya) and seasonal routine (Ritucharya) to carry forward.

🌿 Seasons matter. Classical texts pair Vamana with spring, Virechana with autumn and Basti with the rainy season. Your physician will decide what suits you now.

Alongside Panchakarma

Supportive Therapies Maha Ayurved May Combine

Abhyanga

Therapeutic oil massage, used in the preparation stage and on its own, chosen to suit your constitution.

Shirodhara

A steady stream of warm medicated oil poured over the forehead, often advised for stress and disturbed sleep.

Kati, Greeva and Janu Basti

Medicated oil retained over the lower back, neck or knee in a dough well, used for local stiffness and discomfort.

Where It Is Considered

What Can Panchakarma Support?

Ayurvedic physicians consider Panchakarma as one part of a wider care plan, and as seasonal care for healthy people. The therapies below are those classically paired with each area. The final choice is always made after assessment.

Know the Difference

Panchakarma vs Other Ayurvedic Care

Ayurveda describes two broad approaches. Shodhana removes accumulated Doshas, while Shamana pacifies them with medicines, diet and routine. Many care plans combine both.

Patient Questions

Panchakarma Treatment in Pune: Questions Answered by Maha Ayurved

What patients ask our physicians before beginning Panchakarma, answered plainly.

About Panchakarma at Maha Ayurved

What is Panchakarma, and how does Maha Ayurved carry it out?

Panchakarma, meaning “five actions”, is the classical Ayurvedic system of purification therapies (Shodhana). At Maha Ayurved, a physician first assesses your Prakriti, Vikriti, Agni and strength. Only then is a programme planned: preparation (Snehana and Swedana), the main therapy, and a graded recovery diet. Nothing begins before this assessment.

Which Panchakarma therapies are available at Maha Ayurved?

Our physicians plan the classical therapies Vamana, Virechana, Basti and Nasya, and Raktamokshana where clinically appropriate, together with supportive therapies such as Abhyanga, Shirodhara and Kati, Greeva and Janu Basti. Not every patient needs all five. Many are advised one or two, and some are advised none.

Who plans my Panchakarma treatment at Maha Ayurved?

Your programme is prepared by our Ayurvedic physicians, led by Dr. Ravindra Borade (B.A.M.S., 18+ years of experience), with Dr. Seema Kadam (M.D. Ayurveda) consulting at both clinics. Planning follows a detailed consultation covering your history, reports, current medicines and Nadi Pariksha.

What happens at the first Panchakarma consultation at Maha Ayurved?

The physician takes a detailed history, reviews your reports and every medicine you take, and assesses your Prakriti, Agni, Bala and Nadi. You are then told whether Panchakarma suits you, which therapy is advised, the likely schedule and an estimate. Please bring recent reports and prescriptions.

Planning, Duration and Cost

How many days does Panchakarma treatment take?

Programmes are commonly described as 7 to 21 days, including preparation, the main therapy and the recovery diet, and some are shorter or longer. Maha Ayurved does not work from one fixed package. Your physician sets the duration after assessment and adjusts it as you respond.

What is the cost of Panchakarma treatment in Pune at Maha Ayurved?

Cost depends on the therapies you need, the number of days or sessions, the medicines and oils used, and follow-up. Because each programme is planned individually, a reliable figure is possible only after assessment. Maha Ayurved gives you a clear estimate at your consultation, before any therapy begins.

Which season is best for Panchakarma in Pune?

Classical texts pair Vamana with Vasanta (spring), Virechana with Sharad (autumn) and Basti with Varsha (the rainy season). The junctions between seasons are also traditionally used for cleansing. Your Maha Ayurved physician decides the right timing for you, because your condition and strength can matter more than the calendar.

How often should Panchakarma be done?

For healthy people, Ayurveda describes seasonal cleansing as part of preventive care, in keeping with the principle Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshanam (protecting the health of the healthy), often once or twice a year as advised. For an existing condition, frequency depends on your physician’s review. Repeating Panchakarma without assessment is not advised.

Safety, Diet and Recovery

Is Panchakarma safe, and what are the side effects?

Under qualified supervision it is generally well tolerated. Most procedures are not painful, though some steps can be unpleasant, such as oleation with medicated ghee or the effects of Vamana and Virechana. Temporary tiredness, reduced appetite or changes in digestion may occur and usually settle within days. Severe pain, persistent vomiting, high fever or marked weakness should be reported to your physician at once.

Who should avoid Panchakarma?

A physician may advise against or postpone it in pregnancy, acute illness or fever, severe weakness, or soon after major surgery. Uncontrolled blood pressure, heart disease, bleeding disorders and serious kidney or liver disease need careful review, and some procedures are rescheduled during menstruation. Please share your full health history at your Maha Ayurved assessment.

Can I continue my regular medicines during Panchakarma?

Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Our physicians ask for every medicine and supplement you take, advise whether anything needs adjusting, and recommend coordination with your treating doctor where needed. Panchakarma supports your care and does not replace medical treatment.

What should I eat during and after Panchakarma?

Follow the plan your physician gives you, which is usually light, warm and easy to digest. After the main therapy, food is reintroduced in stages (Samsarjana Krama), commonly over several days. The exact plan depends on your constitution and the therapy you have had.

Can I work during Panchakarma treatment?

It depends on the therapy. Gentle procedures such as Abhyanga or Shirodhara may fit around a working day, whereas Vamana and Virechana usually call for rest. Once your therapy is chosen, your Maha Ayurved physician will tell you how much leave to plan.

Is Panchakarma suitable if I have diabetes, thyroid or blood pressure conditions?

Possibly, but only after careful review, because these conditions influence the choice of therapy. At Maha Ayurved, your physician examines your reports and prescriptions first and advises coordination with your treating doctor. Medicines must never be stopped without advice.

Is Panchakarma good for weight loss?

Panchakarma should not be viewed as a quick weight-loss programme. Some people notice changes in weight as digestion and routine improve, but this varies and no result is promised. If weight is your concern, your physician will assess the cause and plan diet and lifestyle care accordingly.

Choosing a Panchakarma Centre in Pune

Which is the best Panchakarma treatment centre in Pune?

The best centre is one where a qualified physician assesses you before any therapy, explains each step and its risks, plans the programme for you rather than from a fixed package, gives a clear estimate and follows up afterwards. Maha Ayurved’s clinics in Wakad and Kasarwadi are built around these principles and are rated 4.9 on Google.

How is Panchakarma at Maha Ayurved different from an Ayurvedic spa massage?

Abhyanga massage is only one preparatory step within Panchakarma. At Maha Ayurved, Panchakarma is a medical protocol: physician assessment, preparation with Snehana and Swedana, a main purification procedure, and guided recovery. A spa session is usually relaxation-focused and does not include these stages.
