Jaundice is a medical condition characterized by the yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes. It occurs when there is an excess of bilirubin in the blood, which can be due to various underlying causes. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment that forms when red blood cells break down.

Common causes of jaundice include:

  1. Hepatitis: Inflammation of the liver, often caused by viral infections (such as hepatitis A, B, or C), autoimmune disorders, or toxic substances.
  2. Obstruction of the bile ducts: Blockage of the bile ducts due to gallstones, tumors, or other obstructions can prevent bilirubin from being excreted properly, leading to jaundice.
  3. Liver cirrhosis: Scarring of the liver tissue, usually resulting from chronic liver disease or long-term alcohol abuse, can impair liver function and cause jaundice.
  4. Hemolytic anemia: Increased breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis) can lead to elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood, causing jaundice.
  5. Gilbert’s syndrome: A benign genetic condition that affects the liver’s ability to process bilirubin efficiently, resulting in mild, intermittent jaundice.

Symptoms of jaundice may include yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark-colored urine, pale stools, itching (pruritus), fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

In Ayurveda, jaundice is known as “Kamala” or “Pandu Roga,” and it is considered a disorder of the Pitta dosha primarily, with involvement of other doshas depending on the underlying cause. Ayurvedic treatment for jaundice aims to balance the doshas, improve liver function, promote the elimination of toxins, and restore overall health and well-being.     • Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): This herb is known for its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce fluid retention and inflammation in the liver.
  3. Lifestyle Modifications:

    • Avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and other substances that can further burden the liver and aggravate Pitta dosha.
